Another Earth Movie Review!

Hey everyone! My next review is for the film Another Earth. Another Earth is an independent, dramatic film IMDB sums it up pretty well saying: "On the night of the discovery of a duplicate planet in the solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident."

Another Earth is a bit of a downer because we follow Rhoda, the teenage girl, four years after her accident. She originally got accepted to MIT but now works as a janitor at the local high school. Four years earlier she was the drunk driver in a car crash and killed a mother, young boy, and put the father in a coma. She discovers that the father, John Burroughs, has awoken from his coma a few years back and finds out where he lives to apologize. Though she chickens out and ends up being his maid. They develop a relationship and it becomes increasingly more difficult to tell him that she caused the accident and wanted to apologize.

While this is going on they are getting closer and closer in communicating with Earth 2, the second Earth they discovered that mirrors the original Earth. Same geography, same people, etc. There's a contest to win a trip to Earth 2 and Rhonda enters.

I don't want to give anything else away but I will say while the story is sad it is a bit inspiring. Earth 2 becomes a kind of state-of-mind that there could be something better, maybe the other you is doing better and made better decisions. Maybe John Burroughs' family is still alive on the other planet. This is what Rhonda truly believes too.

I really like the ending, typically with movies like this they kind of want you to think but this one ends very tastefully.

The science fiction mixed with realism worked really well because they incorporated news and radio reports of Earth 2. I like how it's not so much creepy that there is an Earth 2 as much as fascinating. Usually science fiction is creepy but they tried to make to less fiction and more true to life, if that makes sense.

Overall, it was a decent movie, some parts were predictable but some were surprising. It is worth a watch, I know they have it at RedBox now and you really can't go wrong renting it for $1.25. It won a few awards at Sundance and is nominated for a few Independent Spirit Awards. The actress who plays Rhonda, Brit Marling also co-wrote the movie which I thought was pretty cool, too.

Buy It! Head on over to Amazon or check out your local Best Buy/DVD store now!

  1. I agree - good movie. And - amazing scene with a guy playing a saw - how many movies have that?! You can listen to the music from this scene on the composer's website http://www.scottmunsonmusic.com/news/music-in-film-another-earth-soundtrack
